The Device Name Is Just the Starting Point
Ultherapy is classified as microfocused ultrasound with visualization, or MFU-V. This approach delivers focused ultrasound energy to a set depth without disrupting the skin surface, forming thermal coagulation points where the tissue is heated enough to trigger a remodeling response in collagen and elastin over the following months, according to research indexed in PubMed Central on microfocused ultrasound and skin remodeling.
The part that determines where that energy lands is the transducer. According to Korea Biomedical Review's 2025 coverage of the Ultherapy Prime launch by Merz Aesthetics Korea, the device uses three transducers, at 1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm, and its main change from the prior generation was a wider field of view on its real-time imaging feature, DeepSEE.
What 1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm Actually Target
The depth numbers aren't marketing language. They're treatment parameters documented in the clinical literature. Tatjana Pavicic and colleagues, writing in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025 after reviewing 703 studies and analyzing 67 of them in detail, described MFU-V as targeting the deep dermis and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), a collagen-dense structural layer, at focal depths of 1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm, with tissue temperatures in the 60-70°C range forming at each focal point (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2025).
A separate randomized controlled trial published in Dermatology and Therapy in 2023 breaks the roles apart further. The 4.5mm transducer creates thermal injury in the SMAS and deep fat, contributing mainly to lifting along the jawline and contour. The 3.0mm transducer produces similar change in superficial fat and fascia, contributing more to tightening (Dermatology and Therapy, 2023).

The depths in that table describe what the cited literature says each transducer targets. Which combination applies to a given face is a clinical judgment, not a table lookup. A thin facial structure and a thicker one don't take the same settings.

The imaging component exists to let the provider see tissue thickness and confirm targeting before energy is delivered, not after. Merz Aesthetics announced on November 5, 2025 that Ultherapy Prime received U.S. FDA clearance for skin laxity on the anterior arms, posterior arms and abdomen, adding to existing indications covering the brow, neck, submental area and décolletage lines (Merz Aesthetics, 2025). The company announced a further knee indication in August 2026 (Merz Aesthetics, 2026).
A U.S. clearance covers U.S. use. What's approved for use in Korea is a separate registration, and it's public. Device registrations, approval numbers and approval dates for equipment sold in Korea are published by Korea's public data portal (data.go.kr), and that record is worth checking against whatever a clinic tells you, whether you check it before your trip or after your consultation.

Yes. Korea's public data portal publishes device names, classifications, approval numbers, approval dates and manufacturer information for registered medical devices (data.go.kr). Once a clinic confirms which device and transducer they're using, you can look up the registration independently.
Can Ultherapy treat areas besides the face?

Why use three different depths instead of one?
Because the tissue layers being treated aren't the same. The literature describes the 4.5mm transducer as targeting the SMAS and deep fat, mainly relevant to lifting, and the 3.0mm transducer as targeting superficial fat and fascia, mainly relevant to tightening (Dermatology and Therapy, 2023). Sagging along the jaw and looseness in skin texture aren't the same problem, so a single depth can't address both.
